When I was first getting into film I stumbled upon The Silence of the Lambs on Netflix. This was one of the first films I saw that helped me take the medium seriously. Just one year earlier, at the 1990 Oscars, Kathy Bates had shocked everyone by winning Best Actress for Rob Reiner’s Stephen King adaptation, Misery. Next came The Silence of the Lambs, the first horror film to win Best Picture and only the third film ever to sweep the Oscars’ “Big Five” categories (Picture, Actor, Actress, Director, and Screenplay). I"m kicking myself for not having seen it sooner. Basically perfection from beginning to end. This amazing project moves from one extraordinary scene to the next. I love the conversations between Starling and Lecter - they"re my favorites - but that elevator sequence!!!!!!!! Even though I have my own thoughts about Foster outside her acting career, her Oscar for this role is well-deserved. And Hopkins as Lecter - praise be to ceiling cat - it"s easily one of the finest performances in cinema history. I now want to drink in this world fully. The other movies, the TV shows, the books, etc. I expect they won"t be of this very quality - but that"s a very high bar indeed. I was big baby when I was young (still am) and would never watch scary movies. Very happy I finally watched. FASCINATING FEAR Silence of the lambs offers one of the most controversial and fascinating stories in the history of cinema. A picture that for the entire duration is a mixture of comedy / theatrical tragedy and a cult film (which it later became). We witness the whole story, frame to frame, step by step from a glorious balcony of a theatre stage made of wood and blood, with spotlights focused on some of the greatest actors in history and of that time. Unprecedented direction, incessant rhythm that keeps glued to the armchair, almost as if Dr. Hannibal had chained us all himself. Watched this for my first time at The Senator theater last year. Can see why this is such a cultural touchstone. It"s a movie that really shouldn"t work--just this hard-boiled mystery movie mixed with very Die Hard-esque action sequences. But it does. Demme is really good at just conveying so much through so little. Those straight on tight shots of the faces. That grey-ish color palette. That opening scene of Jodi Foster just going through the obstacle course. It"s gold. The bug boys were the absolute highlight of this rewatch. Just two bug lovin boys doing what they do best, lovin bugs. The Silence Of The Lambs is one of the great "Serial Killer" thrillers. For a long time, one of the only horror adjacent films to win an Oscar and the only one to win Best Picture. So revisiting this film after not seeing it for close to a decade felt special as it"s still lost none of its brilliance. It feels like it takes the police procedural and serial killer flick and injects it with a sense of class and effortlessness. Anthony Hopkins inhabits the role of Hannibal Lecter and makes it all his own. With one film, he created one of the great and iconic horror villains.
